A specialist retailer of collectible toys and games, operating in a highly competitive niche market, had accumulated multiple short-term business loans across different lenders. The Challenge

The client was servicing five separate short-term loans with high interest rates, leading to total monthly repayments of approximately £29,000. While the business remained viable, continuing on this trajectory would have placed it at serious risk.

Importantly, the client acted proactively before missing any payments. This was critical, as lender appetite diminishes sharply once defaults occur. Their existing broker declined to assist with consolidation, likely due to limited lender selection and commission-driven constraints, leaving the client with no clear path forward.

The Solution

We took a different approach by engaging directly with high-street lenders, prioritising affordability and long-term sustainability over commission. Using the Government Growth Guarantee Scheme (GGS), we refinanced £279,000 of the existing debt into a single structured term loan, supported by a personal guarantee from the business owner.

To address the remaining balance, we arranged a £55,000 overdraft facility that would reduce by £4,000 per month until stabilising at £30,000. This amount was deemed sustainable by the lender. In place of traditional commission, we agreed a transparent service fee with the client to ensure the right solution could be delivered.

The Outcome

The refinancing reduced total monthly repayments from £29,000 to £10,500, delivering an immediate monthly saving of £18,500 and dramatically easing cash flow pressure.

Even during the overdraft reduction phase, the client saw an instant improvement, with savings of around £2,000 per month compared to the previous structure.

With the business now on a stable footing, the client is once again focused on growth and is planning to open a new store in Aberdeen.
